Before the storm: the only real protection is cover
We'll say it plainly because plenty of marketing won't: no wax, sealant or ceramic coating stops a hail dent. Coatings protect against chemical and environmental damage (UV, bugs, road film, water spotting), not impacts. The things that actually prevent hail damage are a garage, a carport, a padded hail cover, or watching the forecast and parking under cover when a storm cell is coming. If you're caught in the open with warning, even a mall parkade beats the driveway.
After the storm: assess before you assume
Once it's passed, give the vehicle a proper wash before judging damage. Dust and water spots hide small dents and make others look worse than they are. Check panels in low-angle light, and photograph anything you find while it's clean. Clear photos of a clean vehicle make any insurance conversation easier.
